2026 Korea Short Parental Leave: 7 or 14 Days, Eligibility & Pay

South Korea introduced short parental leave from August 20, 2026, for specified childcare interruptions. It is a seven- or fourteen-day option, not a flexible collection of individual days.

    What childcare events qualify?

Examples include childcare or school closures, school holidays, a child's hospitalization due to illness or injury, and an infectious-disease attendance suspension. Verify supporting evidence under the official MOEL notice.

The statutory childcare reason is not optional merely because the duration is short.

Can I take three, seven or ten days?

Only a full seven-day or fourteen-day block is available; an arbitrary three-day or ten-day allocation is not recognized as the special short-leave provision. It is available once per child per calendar year.

A block crossing years is counted in its commencement year. The days reduce the total leave entitlement but do not count toward ordinary split-use frequency.

    How is short-leave pay calculated?

Employment-insurance rules apply daily proration to eligible short leave. The planner shows only a simple monthly estimate prorated over 30 days, not the final payable amount or individual claim approval.

Verify the used-benefit month ordinal, underlying 30-day eligibility rules, and actual partial-month amount with Work24.

How is reduced working time different?

Reduced working hours means continuing work on a shorter schedule. Work24 states that in 2026 the first ten weekly hours reduced use a wage-based cap of KRW 2.5m, with additional reduced hours based on 80% wage capped at KRW 1.6m.

The planner's 40-hour example assumes salary proportional to working hours; your employer's pay and actual insurance benefit require separate checks.

What should I check before applying?

Confirm the reason, evidence, annual use limit, exact start and end dates, employer procedure and benefit eligibility. Application timeframes may differ from ordinary leave because of an urgent event.
